Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES) is a condition which is caused by the cauda equina – the bundle of nerves found at the end of the spinal cord – compressing. Although very rare, Cauda Equina Syndrome is a serious condition which, if left untreated, can result in long-term complications such as incontinence and paralysis. CES can be developed due to a number of reasons, such as infectious and inflammatory diseases, tumours, herniated disks and through trauma (for instance, if you’ve been involved in a car crash). Unfortunately, medical errors can also lead to CES occurring, as the condition should be treated as a medical emergency and any delay could result in complications.

If You Think You Might Have Cauda Equina Syndrome

If you are showing symptoms of Cauda Equina Syndrome, make sure you seek medical advice immediately, as any delay in treatment may hinder your chances of recovery. Early symptoms you should look out for include:-

• Pain in the lower back, spreading to the legs, thighs and buttocks;
• Lack of sensation in the saddle/genital area and sexual dysfunction;
• Muscle weakness in the legs and poor reflexes in these areas.

Changes to your urinary or bowel pattern are major indicators of CES, such as incontinence, inability to urinate or empty the bladder, or needing to use the toilet much more often.

Medical Negligence and Cauda Equina Syndrome

Cauda Equina Syndrome should be treated as a medical emergency, and as such should be treated in the first 24 hours of symptoms developing. Long-term complications are much more likely to remain in patients that received treatment after 48 hours of recognising symptoms than patients who received immediate treatment – the sooner the nerves are decompressed, the more chance the patient has of making a recovery. A delay in treatment is usually due to one of two reasons:-

1. The patient may not urgently seek medical advice in the event of symptoms appearing, meaning treatment will not be administered as quickly as may be required.

2. An error may have been made when diagnosing the condition, leading to a delay in treatment or surgery.

Unfortunately, mistakes can be made – a breach of duty may delay treatment, leaving the patient unable to make a full recovery.
